During the lockdown, I was at our mountain cottage chopping mulberry wood for the fire when the form and rough texture of one of the chopped pieces suddenly reminded me of Alberto Giacometti’s sculpture, “Walking Man.” I decided to create a collection inspired by these pieces of wood.
I modeled the general shape of the lamp in two sizes and started chopping the logs with an axe. The natural grain of the wood created intriguing forms, and I simply followed the cracks. I aimed to follow the natural path the wood was taking.
Then I selected pieces with the most appealing shapes, only trimming the top and bottom to fit the dimensions of my lamp, without any additional finishing. I constructed the lamp bodies from these pieces. To preserve the wood’s natural color, I used Osmo Natural for the final coating, maintaining the original appearance. Throughout the process, I kept reflecting on Giacometti’s words: “I no longer work for anything but the sensation I have while working.”
